Spotify has taken a new step to bring a more social dimension to user experience. With the addition of the new DM (Direct Message) feature, users can now not only share songs, podcast episodes, or albums but also chat with their friends directly within the app. This innovation is seen as an important part of Spotify’s goal to blend music with social interaction.
What Is Spotify’s New DM Feature?
Spotify’s new Messages feature offers one-on-one in-app chatting. Users can now share their favorite content directly with friends, chat about it, and get feedback. This feature marks the return of Spotify’s messaging system, which was removed in 2017, now brought back in a renewed form. Moreover, chats are not limited to sharing content only; users can also interact with text and emojis.
How to Use the New Direct Message Feature?
Using the Spotify DM feature is quite simple:
- Tap the Share icon on the song or podcast episode you are listening to.
- Select a person you have previously interacted with inside Spotify.
- Send your message; if the recipient accepts the request, the conversation will begin.
- You can access all your messages from the Messages tab located in the top left corner of your profile.
Messages are designed for one-on-one chats only. For now, there is no group chat option.
Who Can Use It?
The Spotify DM feature is available for both Free and Premium subscribers. However, only users aged 16 and above can access it. The feature is initially being rolled out gradually on mobile devices in select countries.
Privacy and Security
With the DM feature, Spotify also emphasizes privacy and security. Users can:
- Block people in case of unwanted interactions.
- Accept or reject message requests.
- Completely disable the messaging feature if they wish.
Additionally, chats are encrypted during transmission and storage according to industry standards. Spotify also employs proactive detection technologies and reporting mechanisms against inappropriate content to enhance user safety.
Availability in Turkey
Spotify has started rolling out the DM feature gradually. Although no exact date has been given for Turkey, it is expected to become available soon with upcoming updates. Once users see the Messages tab within the app, they will be able to access the feature.
Spotify’s Future with the DM Feature: A More Social Experience
Spotify’s new DM feature combines the music listening experience with social interaction. Users can now not only share songs but also chat with their friends directly in the app. Supported by privacy and security measures, this innovation aims to both strengthen Spotify’s competitiveness and provide users with a more fun and connected experience.
