The Marvel’s Spider-Man series has long been known for its single-player experience. However, a new community-developed co-op mod now allows players to swing through the same city as multiple Spider-Men for the first time. So, is this mod official, which platforms does it work on, and what can players actually do right now? Here are the details.
Is the Co-op Mod Official?
First of all, it should be noted that this co-op mod is not official. The Marvel’s Spider-Man games developed by Insomniac Games are still single-player on consoles. On PC, however, there is a multiplayer mod created by an independent developer named hbgda for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. In other words, this feature was brought into the game entirely by community support, not through official updates.
Which Platforms Does It Work On?
The co-op mod only works on the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. It’s not possible to try this feature on PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4. Also, the mod is currently in closed beta, and access requires joining a specific support tier on the developer’s Patreon page. Therefore, only a limited number of players are able to test it at the moment.
What Can You Do Right Now?
During the closed beta phase, the mod offers players a fun experience especially in free roam. Multiple Spider-Men can swing around New York City together at the same time. In some tests, 6–7 players were seen in the same session. However, story missions and side quests are not yet fully compatible. These sections can cause various bugs and crashes. For now, the mod is mainly suited for “swinging around the city together.”
The Cancelled “The Great Web” Project
It’s worth mentioning that Insomniac Games had previously been working on an online multiplayer project called Spider-Man: The Great Web. This game was planned to bring different Spider-Man characters together. However, the project was eventually cancelled and never released. Today, the community-made co-op mod is seen as the closest experience to that cancelled project.
Spider-Man Co-op Mod Experience
Although still unofficial, the co-op mod for Marvel’s Spider-Man has begun offering players a taste of the long-dreamed multiplayer experience. For now, it’s only available on PC and within closed beta, but it could become more stable and feature-rich in the future.
