Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025 closed with major surprises for the gaming world, and one of the most eye-catching announcements was Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Developed by Game Science, this new project follows the studio’s popular ARPG, Black Myth: Wukong, bringing fresh energy to the series. While only a short CGI teaser was shown, the reveal has already sparked huge excitement among players.
What Did We Learn from the Black Myth: Zhong Kui Announcement?
During the reveal, developers highlighted that Zhong Kui is a god who hunts ghosts, traveling between the underworld and the human realm. The game will be a single-player action RPG, similar to Wukong. However, Game Science stressed that the project is still at a very early stage, describing it as “almost an empty folder.”
This means there are no confirmed gameplay details yet. Still, the studio made it clear that their goal is to deliver a new ARPG experience without straying from their core vision.
Who Is Zhong Kui, the Main Character of Black Myth: Zhong Kui?
In Chinese folklore, Zhong Kui holds an important place as the “King of Ghosts” and “Vanquisher of Evil.” According to legend, despite excelling in imperial exams, he was rejected due to his appearance. After his tragic death, he transformed into a deity who hunts spirits in the afterlife.
Traditionally, images of Zhong Kui are placed on doors to ward off evil spirits. With this rich mythological background, the game is expected to deliver a story deeply rooted in ancient legends.
Connection Between Black Myth: Zhong Kui and Black Myth: Wukong
One of the biggest questions among players is whether the new game is directly connected to Black Myth: Wukong. Game Science clarified that Zhong Kui is not a direct sequel, but part of the same “Black Myth” series.
The developers also teased fans with the statement: “The Journey to the West doesn’t end here.” This suggests that the Wukong universe may continue in different ways in the coming years. In short, Zhong Kui expands and diversifies the Black Myth series rather than simply continuing it.
Black Myth: Zhong Kui Release Date and Platforms
At this stage, there is no official release date. Since the game is in its early development phase, Game Science has not provided a timeline.
As for platforms, the announcement included the phrase “PC and all mainstream console platforms” — confirming that the game will launch on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. However, it is still unclear whether the release will be simultaneous across all systems or involve any exclusivity deals.

With the reveal of Black Myth: Zhong Kui, Game Science has opened the door to a new game universe based on Chinese mythology. Following the success of Black Myth: Wukong, the studio aims to continue exploring legendary figures with unique ARPG experiences.
