OpenAI is on the verge of abandoning its long-held "ad-free AI" policy. Despite CEO Sam Altman’s past declaration that he "hates ads," shifting economic dynamics have pushed the company toward new revenue streams. ChatGPT, the favorite application of millions, is now at the very center of this transformation.

Official Statements and First Signs

This topic is more than just internet gossip. Speaking to the Financial Times, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar officially confirmed that they have started "exploring" ad-based revenue models. While the company states there is no active plan yet, new revenue strategies for its popular service, ChatGPT, are definitely on the table.

Hiring from Tech Giants

For this transition process, OpenAI has begun hiring experienced executives from advertising giants like Google and Meta. These hires are viewed as the most concrete evidence that advertising infrastructure is being built.

Why the Need for Ads?

The cost of running AI models is incredibly high. Unlike traditional websites, operating ChatGPT results in a significant daily cash outflow for the company.

$700,000 Daily Cost

According to analyses, the daily server costs for ChatGPT operations exceed $700,000. The $20 "Plus" subscriptions alone are insufficient to cover this massive expenditure.

Monetizing Free Users

Millions of people have free access to ChatGPT. While this audience provides data to the company, it also represents a major cost center. Ads are viewed as the most effective way to monetize this vast user base.

How Will Ads Appear to Us?

Screen-filling pop-ups or videos, which users fear, are not expected. So, how will ads appear within the ChatGPT interface? OpenAI will likely focus on "Native" models that do not disrupt the user experience.

SearchGPT and Search Ads

OpenAI's search engine initiative, SearchGPT, could be the first area where ads are integrated. Similar to Google Search results, sponsored links may appear above the answers.

Sponsored Product Recommendations

During a chat, when you ask, "Which sports shoes should I buy?" the AI, while recommending the brand offering the best features, might act within the framework of a sponsored partnership.

User Trust and Privacy Concerns

The transition to an advertising model also brings serious risks for OpenAI. Users are most concerned about the erosion of neutrality while using ChatGPT.

Recommendation or Ad?

People may begin to doubt whether the provided answer is genuinely the best option or if it was suggested because a brand paid for it. This situation could damage the "reliable assistant" image .

Data Privacy and Targeting

Data processing is essential for showing ads. Whether our chat history and personal secrets will be used for ad targeting will be the most critical topic of discussion regarding GDPR and KVKK.
